Life is distinguished from inanimate matter, by this and other evidence.
Science says if it moves and uses oxygen and metabolizes nutrients, it is ALIVE.
If we see a fossil of mold or lichen, we can determine if something has been alive in the past.
If such evidence was found in a rock from Mars, it would be the event of the century.
We would be excited at evidence of life outside our planet.
Legally, we find that the scientific evidence for life can be set aside, and if the moving, metabolizing structure is in a woman’s womb, it is not alive. The same structure, 20 minutes later, leaves the womb, and begins to cry, it is alive.
So since it is not LEGALLY alive, this structure can be removed. If the structure, removed from the womb shows signs of life, it can have the evidence of life extinguished.
So… Legal rulings determine what alive is.
Are we going to see other legal definitions of life, that also deny the scientific evidence for life?
At one time, the law said that Black People were not 100% human. At one time the law did not allow Women full rights of Citizens.
This was LEGAL, and our society functioned with these LEGAL definitions, to our detriment as a society.
Perhaps the legal definitions of life will more closely match the scientific definition of life.
Who among us will ignore the scientific evidence of life in the womb, and continue to terminate this life?
‘Well, it’s legal’, is a poor excuse to allow our society to continue to terminate pregnancies with abortion.
